What is a coaching session like?

A coaching session is a focused conversation where we look closely at your situation, the change you want to make, and what’s been getting in the way. I bring perspective, ask questions, and challenge assumptions or narratives that may no longer be serving you. I don’t tell you what to do, but I do help you think differently about your options and walk away with perspective and practical ways to take steps toward the goal you’re working toward.

What level of time and effort is expected outside of sessions?

I meet clients where they are and understand that everyone’s responsibilities, resources, and support systems are different. That said, coaching sessions alone can only take you so far. Just like taking a weekly guitar lesson without practicing in between won’t make you a proficient player, change becomes harder to achieve without action in between sessions. What those steps look like varies based on the client, what came up in the session, what’s been getting in the way, and the goal at hand. Some things I’ve had clients do include journaling, applying for roles they felt unsure about, initiating conversations they’d been avoiding, or taking specific steps toward a career move they’d been putting off. The point isn’t busywork. It’s taking steps that bring you closer to the change you’re trying to make.

How long does coaching typically last?

That depends on the change you’re trying to make and the steps required to get there. Some goals can be addressed with a single extended, focused session, especially when the decision itself is the main obstacle. Other goals involve multiple steps and benefit from working together over a few months so there’s time to uncover patterns and beliefs that may be limiting you and to support the work required to move toward your goal. The length of coaching is tied to what you’re trying to change and the level of support needed to help you follow through on it.
